PADI Coral Restoration Specialty Instructor

The program is open to PADI Instructors who are wanting the background skill and knowledge to certify divers in this unique specialty. We run the program as a training workshop at the Nusa Islands Coral Restoration Project. It is run parallel to our Coral Restoration Workshop, so that instructor candidates learn both technical skills covered in the workshop, but also develop teaching techniques along-side student participants.

Program outline is as follows:

Day 1:  Each day of the course consists of 2 ocean dives in the morning followed by afternoon classroom sessions. We start in the classroom with an introduction to the course, logistics and safety, certification standards. The first few days of the course are then focused on developing background knowledge  about restoration ecology and types of coral restoration projects. The first diving day is then spent surveying impact sites and viewing a selection of coral restoration projects taking place on the island.

Day 2:  We discuss developing a restoration plan. The classroom session focuses on identifying impacts on reefs and monitoring the health of coral reefs. Followed by a site assessment of the restoration area including mapping and identifying the role of restoration methods which would improve ecosystem health.

Day 3:  We focus on structural aspects of reef restoration, discussing various structures used in coral restoration projects around the world. We begin building modular reef structures on shore. Then out diving to installing reef structures and substrate stabilization underwater.

Day 4: This day's focus is biologicial aspects of restoration. So, after a short coral reef ecology session we then discuss species selection and community composition. Underwater work includes identifying suitable coral species for the restoration site and selecting suitable donor sites for collecting coral transplants. Transplanting corals into the coral restoration site.

Day 5: Classroom topic: Coral nurseries and adapting coral restoration projects to changing environmental conditions. Dives focus on building the coral nursery and maintenance of the restoration site.

Day 6: Developing a monitoring plan in the classroom. Then out diving to conduct monitoring surveys at the site. Inspect and monitor some of the older areas of the restoration site and look for growth.

Day 7: Teaching coral restoration to students. This is a full classroom (dry) day for instructor candidates to discuss methods and ethics in teaching coral restoration. We will develop with each instructor candidate a plan for adapting teaching a course to different sites around the world.
