Reef Health Monitoring
Blue Corner has been monitoring the reefs in the Nusa Penida Marine Park since 2011. Our reef health monitoring program consists of four parts:
Reef Check Surveys at our 4 main study sites. For several years Blue Corner has been regularly monitoring the reef substrate, fish & invertebrate communities and impacts at sites in the marine park. As the only Reef Check Instructor training centre in Indonesia we have a robust long-term monitoring data set at our primary training site, and collaborate with several other organizations throughout Indonesia on reef monitoring and training.
Coral Health & Bleaching Surveys. We regularly conduct surveys for coral bleaching using Coral Watch Coral Health Charts as well as conduct coral disease surveys at select sites in the marine park.
Marine Park Long Term Monitoring Surveys. As one of the founding members of the Lembongan Marine Association, Blue Corner has been helping out and sponsoring the Marine Park annual reef health monitoring surveys since 2012. Blue Corner team members work together with the Coral Triangle Center, Lembongan Marine Association, and Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs in annual fish & substrate surveys of several permanent transects around the marine park.
Dive Against Debris. At Blue Corner all of our professional-level students take part in Project Aware Dive Against Debris clean up dives - which means most weeks we are out on the reefs with mesh bags removing rubbish, fishing line, plastic and other marine debris from the reefs. The trash then gets weighed, sorted, logged and as much as possible sent to Nusa Lembongan’s new recycling centre.
