Marine Conservation Internship - October 2027

  • Blue Corner Dive Gg. Nusa Indah Bali, 80771 Indonesia (map)

Our Scientific Internships are intensive programs which combines training in coral reef ecology, reef health monitoring and coral restoration. This internship intake starts the first Saturday of each month. With options to mix-and-match modules for 2, 3 or 4 week internships. Each week of the program builds upon the next so that students gain in-depth knowledge of impacts and solutions for coral reef health.

The week is an in-depth introduction to Marine Ecology which ties in knowledge specific to the areas you will be diving in the Nusa Penida Marine Park. Each day includes specific task-orientated diving and lectures in topics from coral health, marine invertebrates and tropical reef fish identification.

During this program module you will learn to identify coral species and learn about drivers of coral reef health. This background biology information provides a solid foundation for then working on coral restoration.

This module starts the SECOND saturday of each month and is a great way to get hands-on experience with underwater surveys. In this module we will learn about several survey techniques used to monitor coral reef health - including standard Reef Check surveys, and learn ways to monitoring for coral health and bleaching. During the week you will conduct reef health monitoring surveys at our coral restoration site as well as comparison surveys at neighbouring reefs.

This module is one of our most popular! Each day is spent diving at our coral restoration sites learning step-by-step methods involved in restoration planning, methods, maintenance and site monitoring. The restoration week can be taken as a stand-alone course starting on the THIRD saturday of each month, or combined with the other modules into a full comprehensive coral reef conservation training program.

The megafauna week can also be taken as a stand-alone week and starts the FOURTH Saturday of each month. This is a fun week of diving doing manta and turtle surveys plus looking for other marine animals that frequent the waters around Nusa Penida Marine Park.
